One of the things that are mysterious and significant about the plot of 10 Cloverfield Lane is that Howard lives in a bunker and the only explanation that the audience is given for why Michelle is in the bunker is that it belongs to Howard.
Howard took Michelle to the bunker in order to treat her injuries from a car crash, and as a result they were quarantined at the address of Howard’s brother.
There’s a lot more to Howard’s story than what he tells Michelle, and this is why she distrusts her captor.
Michelle and Emmett soon discover that Howard is very aware that his regular mentions of Megan are actually about another girl, who was a missing girl several years prior.
Howard starts thinking about having a family, and it becomes clear that he wants his daughter to also become his daughter.
Michelle and Emmett are forced to fight against Howard while they’re uncertain whether leaving the bunker is safe. They know that Howard will kill them if they leave.
Howard has many roles in 10 Cloverfield Lane, and all of them are very different from one another. Howard is both the main character of the film and the one who saved the day for Michelle and Emmett.
He is a murderer, delusional, and dangerous conspiracy theorist. But understanding Howard’s past is important to fully understand his motivations throughout the film.
Howard only tells us a small portion of his past in 10 Cloverfield Lane, which makes most of what the film tells us about him highly suspect.
Howard might have been aware of some attacks when he was working on a satellite, and his later comments about his daughter and ex-wife being gone become sinister after the tragic revelation about Brittany.
He is dangerous, and that he wants to hold on to his missing daughter — even though Michelle is just the latest victim in a chain of women who have been captured before. Howard may have seen an opportunity to take Michelle when the terrorists attacked, and then he kept her in the bunker with him.
