3. A Tail that Swishes: Focused

If your cat is very focused on something, you will often see the cat tail swishing from side to side. You will usually also see your cat’s eyes staring intensely at the object of their focus.

If you know that your cat is focusing on something, they will want to be around that thing as much as possible.

You can either leave them alone so they can enjoy whatever their object of focus is, or, if you’re worried they might pounce on something that can cause harm, you can get rid of that object.

4. A Tail that Whips: Aggression and Fear

If your cat is feeling very threatened, you will often see the tail go up and down, side to side, or start whipping around in circles.

If your cat’s tail is whipping around and they are staring at you with a fearful expression on their face, they probably don’t want to be around you. They might also hiss at you or growl.

Give them some time to calm down or separate them from whatever is scaring them.

5. A Puffed-Up Tail: Stressed Out

If your cat is feeling very stressed out, you will often see their tail puffed up and sticking straight up in the air.

Their tail might seem thicker, or you will see their bristled hair puffing out in different directions. They may arch their back and arch their tail upward to increase the length of their fur and show their displeasure toward you or another person in the room.

They’re basically trying to make their tail look bigger to ward off whatever is agitating them. It’s best to try to leave your cat alone or take them away from what’s angering them so they can cool off.
