Pressure is a fact of life. You may not like it, but you can’t avoid it.  You will feel pressure in your personal life, in your career, and in competition.

You may be the type that thrives on pressure, or you may be the type that has sought out lifeless stress. No matter what, though, you will have to deal with pressure.

So here are 5 tips to help you stay calm under pressure:

1. Recognize it

Pressure is an ever-present reality. You may be able to ignore it for a time, but eventually, it will rear its ugly head.

If you can, you should try to identify the source of your pressure and the time frame involved. If it is an upcoming event, you can prepare for it.

If it is an ongoing issue, you can avoid it. If you can’t identify it, you will have to deal with it as it comes. This is not ideal, but at least you will have some time to prepare.

2. Relax

Once you’ve identified the source of your pressure, you need to relax. This can be extremely difficult, as the source of your pressure may be a genuine and immediate problem.

If the source of the pressure is not immediate, you should take a deep breath and relax. Relax your body. Relax your mind.

Take some time to think about a pleasant topic. If you are in the middle of a particularly stressful situation, you may be able to breathe deep and relax a specific muscle group. Whatever you have to do, relax your body.
