Science is always better when it’s hands-on. Not only is it a great way to get your children interested in science, but it can also be a great way to get them interested in the kitchen.

With a little common sense and a little help from the internet, you can turn the kitchen into a fun science lab. Here are 5 science experiments that you can do at home with your kids.

1. Make an Alka Seltzer Explosion

This is a classic science experiment that you can do with your kids. All it takes is washing soda, baking soda, vinegar, and a plastic bottle.

Ensure the kids wear old clothing for this one and make sure that you have paper towels on hand. You are going to want to protect everything from the foaming soda.

First, you are going to fill the bottle about 1/3 of the way up with washing soda. Then add vinegar until the bottle is almost full. It will start to bubble, so you will need to cap it quickly.

Wait about 5 minutes and then uncap the bottle. The top should be covered in foam. It also helps to have a second bottle with a funnel to place it over the bottle with the foam and let it flow into the second bottle.

Then pour a little baking soda into a cup and have the kids put a little vinegar into a cup. They should put a little baking soda into their vinegar and watch it fizz up.

2. Make a Mentos Geyser

This is another classic science experiment you can do with your kids. All you need is a bottle of diet coke, a 2-liter bottle of soda, and a roll of Mentos.

Open up the Diet Coke and fill the 2L bottle about 1/4 of the way up with it. Make sure that you have your Mentos ready. Then carefully put the roll of Mentos into the soda.

The soda will start to bubble, and it will start to spray out of the bottle. You don’t want to stand directly in front of it, but you can stand off to the side and let the kids run in and out.
