When we think of a hero, we often picture a person who possesses a variety of skills and qualities. From warriors to police officers, firefighters to soldiers, the list goes on and on.

But what about animals?

Animals can be very heroic in their own right, too. They have been portrayed as heroes in literature and movies for many years.

In the movie Secretariat (2010), the main character is a horse named Secretariat. Secretariat was an American thoroughbred racehorse that was bred by Penny Chenery at Meadow Stables in Doswell, Virginia.

His birth name was Big Red or just plain Red. When he was born on March 30th, 1970, he had to be given a new name because he was red all over! His name became Secretariat after he won his first race in 1972.

The story of this amazing horse is portrayed by Diane Lane in the movie based on the book written by William Nack and Jerry Hopkins.

He has always been known for his amazing speed which led him to win several important races during his careers such as the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes where he became the first Triple Crown winner since 1948.

His winning time of 1:59.40 in the Belmont Stakes was not only a new world record, but it was also the fastest mile ever run by a horse. In his career, he won 21 of his 22 races and he broke track records in every single one of them.
