You probably know someone who has mood swings. Maybe you have experienced them yourself.

Mood swings are a common occurrence, and they can be caused by a variety of factors. When you don’t know what to do to stop them, it can be really frustrating.

This article will help you understand why mood swings happen, and what you can do to stop them. So, let’s get started.

What Causes Mood Swings?

In our daily lives, we experience a variety of emotions. Sometimes these emotions are positive, and sometimes they are negative.

The shifts in our mood are a result of the way our brain processes these emotions. So, here are common reasons why you experience constant mood swings:

Medical Conditions

Although mood swings suggest an emotional cause, the changes can also be linked to recent brain-damaging trauma or long-term conditions, such as dementia or concussions.

Some medical history or conditions, including those caused by neurologic conditions, are also possible risk factors for mood swinging. These can include diabetes (high blood glucose), Parkinson’s disease, and thyroid disorders.

Medications

Certain medications can also cause mood swinging, such as antidepressants and antipsychotics. Also, combination of medications can also lead to increased risk for mood swings.

These affect neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that help communicate between different parts of the brain.

Hormones

Hormones are chemicals that are produced by the body to control various functions.

Women typically experience shifts of mood during the menstrual cycle, menopausal transition, and during the early stages of pregnancy.

In men, mood swings can be caused by testosterone levels.
