Different Perspective: The Advice Therapists Give to Help Clients Improve Their Lives

We all have a unique way of perceiving the world. We each see things from our unique perspectives. It’s because of this that we can learn so much from each other and learn how to improve ourselves and our lives.

However, with handling difficult moments, we sometimes have a hard time seeing things from a different perspective. This is because it’s easier to think about the negative than it is to think about the positive.

And when we think about the negative, we’re not seeing things from a different perspective.

Here, we’d like to suggest some approaches that therapists use during behavioral therapy to help clients see things from a different perspective and improve their lives.

1. Ask open-ended questions

We’re all very used to answering questions with a “yes” or “no” response. But sometimes, it’s better to ask a question that leaves room for discussion.

For example, if someone asks you what you want to do next week, you could say something like:

What do you think about the idea of going to the beach for the weekend?

This is a good question because it doesn’t have a yes/no answer. And leaving room for discussion makes it easier for the other person to have an open mind and see things from a different perspective.

2. Focus on things that are important to them

It’s very easy to focus on what we don’t like about someone or something in our lives and make our lives miserable.

But focusing on the positive is important too because it makes us happier and more content with our lives.

So, we’d like to suggest try focusing on things that are important to their clients instead of what they don’t like about them or how they feel when they’re feeling depressed or angry at them.

3. Ask yourself about the negative emotions you’re feeling

Sometimes, it’s better to ask yourself about the negative emotions you’re feeling instead of thinking about what someone else is doing or saying.

For example, if you’re angry at someone, it’s okay to ask yourself why you’re angry and how their behaviors made you feel. Maybe it’s actually disappointment or anxieties, not anger itself.

With this technique, you can learn to let go of the anger and choose a better way of dealing with your emotions.

In the solution-focused therapy, you need to examine your feelings first before trying to find a solution. Therapists use this as interventions when patients feel overwhelmed by their life experiences.
