Do you experience hair loss? It can be a very frustrating and embarrassing problem as hair is one of the most visible features on the body.

There are different causes of hair loss, and while some may be temporary, others may be more serious and require professional help.

As such, it is important to know the different major causes of hair loss so that you can identify the most likely culprit and take appropriate steps to address the problem.

What are the Major Causes of Hair Loss?

Hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

Hair loss is a common problem, and one that is often caused by hormones.

Specifically, hair loss can be due to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is produced in larger quantities in men than women.

DHT can cause hair loss by inhibiting the growth of hair follicles, and it is often the cause of male-pattern baldness.

While DHT is usually only a problem in men, it can also cause hair loss in women under certain circumstances.

Stress

Stress can cause temporary hair loss, known as telogen effluvium.

Telogen effluvium is a condition where a lot of hair falls out at the same time. This usually happens because of major life changes or illnesses.

Such stressors should be avoided if possible, and appropriate treatment plans should be sought if the problem persists.

Fungal Infection

The loss of hair can also be the result of a fungal infection.

Common fungal infections that can cause active hair loss include tinea capitis, tinea versicolor, and scalp candidiasis.

You may experience patchy hair loss all over your scalp hairs when you have a fungal infection.

Treatment for these infections usually involves antifungal medication and/or treatment plan with topical creams.

Medication

Certain medications can cause hair loss. These medications include certain antibiotics, birth control pills, and cancer medications.

However, the majority of hair loss caused by medication is temporary and usually resolves on its own once it is discontinued. The medical term for this type of hair loss is pharmacological hair loss.
