We’re all about food these days, and if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that chocolate is pretty awesome. The problem is that when you look at the chocolate-related news in the media, you might be forgiven for thinking that there’s nothing new to learn about chocolate.
We wanted to change that! So here are several things of what you (probably) don’t know about chocolate.
As far back as 4000 B.C., cocoa beans were used as a ceremonial drink, and it’s even been found that the Maya drank chocolate at their ceremonies!
The Mayans made the drink by roasting and fermenting the coca beans, then boiling the drink with water and honey. This drink was solely reserved for noblemen and warriors.
It happened in Ancient Central and South Americas, where cocoa beans were used as currency, especially in ancient Mayan cities.
The Aztecs traded cocoa beans with the Mayans, as they believed that the plant was sacred. The Mayans and the Aztecs believed that cocoa was a gift from the God of Wisdom, Quetzalcoatl.
