3) Anxiety disorders are not the same as a phobia.

A phobia is an intense fear or dislike of something that occurs suddenly and lasts for a short time. A person with a phobia will avoid the thing he or she fears for the rest of his or her life, if possible.

If you have an intense fear of flying but can fly without getting sick then you probably do not have a phobia. You might be suffering from an anxiety disorder instead.

An example would be a person who has trouble driving because he feels so anxious about being in traffic that he starts to feel nauseous and has trouble breathing whenever he drives. He could have a panic attack if he was driving down the highway at 60 miles per hour.

4) Anxiety disorders are a treatable condition.

While there is no cure for anxiety disorders, treatment can help. Treatment for anxiety disorders may include medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.

The goal of treatment is to help you learn how to control your feelings of anxiety. If you do not know how to control your feelings of anxiety, you will continue to feel anxious and may become physically ill.
