Why Do We Need to Learn Emotional Control?

As we’ve seen, emotions affect our daily life. We can choose to ignore them or control them. But the reality is that emotions, even emotional outbursts, are a necessary part of our lives.

If we can’t feel emotions, we won’t be able to think clearly or make excellent decisions. It’s also impossible to live a happy life without being able to experience and express our emotions.

So, the first step in learning how to regulate emotions is understanding why it’s important for us to do so.

How to Regulate Our Emotional Reactions

To learn emotion regulation skills, we need to understand why they’re important. To do this, let’s talk about three important aspects of human nature:

  • how humans react;
  • how people think; and
  • what can influence those reactions and thoughts?

The way we react to life’s challenges is influenced by our genes, our early childhood experiences, and the situations we face throughout our lives.

Our genes give us a tendency to feel angry or scared when we face a situation that threatens our survival. Our emotional experience help determine how we feel about different situations later in life.

And our experiences in the present moment shape how we think about things in the future. For example, if you’ve had a lot of negative experience in your life recently, it might make you more likely to have a strong emotion of anger.

And if you have been experiencing high levels of anxiety lately, it’s almost a natural reaction that you suddenly decide to go on a shopping spree. It’s a way for you to release negative feelings.

To regulate our emotions, we need to understand these aspects of human nature.
