What’s the Meaning Behind the Ending?
With this ending, the film comes full circle, and the mantle of revenge is passed on to Evan. We can speculate that the girls are acting strangely due to some horrific experience they have had.
Some horrific event that has caused them to be acting vengefully will have happened to them, and their actions, in turn, have made Evan do the same.
It looks like it has been a while since the girls went to visit Evan.
It’s now obvious that Karen has discovered what happened to her husband, and the couple’s marriage is about to end.
Evan is about to lose his family. So, he located the girl and wants a payback. The final scene of the film is very dark and mysterious, making it feel like a classic horror or thriller rerun, in which the perpetrators generally reappear.
Roth again subverts hope by showing that it is the former victim who is now on the hunt, and the former assailant the intended prey.
