In addition to being similar to each other, baseball and softball are also very different from each other. Here are some of the major differences between baseball and softball:

  • Fielders: In baseball, fielders can throw the ball back to the pitcher (called a “throwback”). In softball, there is no throwing allowed. Instead, there is only batting allowed. The batter cannot hit the ball back to the pitcher with a bat. Instead, there is only batting allowed in softball.
  • Time limit: Baseball has a time limit of nine innings (two games). Softball has a time limit of ten innings (one game). This means that baseball has more innings than softball.
  • Pitching: In baseball, pitchers throw the ball to hit batters (and fielders). In softball, pitchers do not throw the ball to hit batters or fielders.
  • Batter: In baseball, batters can swing their bats to hit the ball thrown by the pitcher or any batted balls that are caught by fielders. In softball, batters cannot swing their bats at any batted balls thrown by the pitcher or any batted balls that are caught by fielders.
