I just spent the last two days painting my walls, and I’ve learned a few things along the way that I wish I’d known before I started.

I don’t know if these are common knowledge or not, but they are things I wish someone had told me before I got started.

1. Your walls are never going to be perfectly smooth

My wall looked smooth, but it had many little bumps and dips in it that didn’t get filled in when I painted. As I was painting the wall, I could see the texture showing through the paint, so I tried to smooth it out with the roller. This actually made the texture worse because it left lots of little bumps and ridges in the paint.

My advice is just to let the texture show through. If you try to smooth it out, you will get ridges and bumps showing through that will look a lot worse than the bumps you started with.

2. You will get paint everywhere

When you paint, make sure you have lots of newsprint and cardboard to cover your floors and furniture. There is going to be a lot of dripping, splashing, and mess.

If you have some paint that has dripped, don’t use water to try to get it off the floor. That will just spread the paint around. Use paint thinner or rubbing alcohol to get it off.
