Roguelikes are a sub-genre of role-playing games (RPGs) that focus on procedurally generated dungeons and combat challenges. They are known as the classic dungeon crawler, with each “level” having their own unique mechanics and objectives. The more levels you get past in the classic dungeon crawler, the harder the game gets, at least traditionally.

1. Hades (2018)
What is the deepest, darkest dungeon if it’s not Hades’ underworld? Released by Supergiant Games, Hades lets you play as Zagreus, son of Hades, as he tries to escape his father’s domain to reach the surface world.
Zagreus is a demigod, which means there are no permanent death in this game! Dying just means you get teleported back to Hades’ home, and have to restart your journey upwards. Play this game if you enjoy fantasy themes, especially Greek mythology.
2. Hollow Knight (2017)
Published by Team Cherry, Hollow Knight is an indie game about a nameless, mute warrior exploring a mysterious kingdom in ruins.
It has a nonlinear gameplay design, which means you’re not forced to go down a certain storyline path and are instead free to roam as you like, to certain extents. Choose this if you like cute and cartoonish 2D designs.
3. Dead Cells (2017)
Dead Cells is a game by Motion Twin, inspired by other Metroidvania games like Hollow Knight. As the player character, you are the Prisoner: a corpse-like creature that must try to fight their way out of an underground prison in an unnamed island.
This game is perfect for those who prefer minimal storyline, as the game feeds lore only through bits and pieces, leaving the player to connect the dots themselves.
