Chemistry is often known as a difficult subject, but it can be interesting and exciting. One of the things that makes chemistry interesting is that there are many experiments that can be done at home.

These experiments do not require expensive chemicals, and they can be completed in just a few minutes.

Sodium Carbonate Solution

Materials:

5 to 10 mL beaker, disposable stirrer, measuring cylinder, sodium carbonate solution

Procedure:

Measure out 5 to 10 mL of sodium carbonate solution. Place the beaker in a pan of water and heat the water to boiling. This will heat the sodium carbonate solution so that it can dissolve in the water.

Measure out another 5 to 10 mL of sodium carbonate solution and add it to the first mixture. Stir both solutions until they are dissolved completely. Carefully pour both solutions into separate containers.

Label each container with the chemical formula for each solution. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is found in blue litmus paper while sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3) is found in brown litmus paper.

What has been done?

When you mix sodium hydroxide with sodium carbonate, you will get a mixture that is very similar to litmus paper. Litmus paper turns blue when it is wet and turns red when it is dry.

Because litmus paper changes color when it gets wet or dry, this means that it can be used to test whether something is wet or dry.
